Not a big one for Black and White photography myself but every now and then I will give it a try. Just a slightly different photo from an earlier post but without the warm tones.

At the beach

Early morning during August in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Being out on the beach when the sun crests over the horizon can be an amazing thing to watch. For this shot I was getting low in the surf as it was coming in. I used the pier to break up the sun since there was no haze or low clouds to diffuse it. The pier in Avon has its own character. It looks like it has been badly beaten with its support going in various directions. The deck has a number of deviations, both up and down or left and right. It doesn’t seem to be going anywhere though. Photo was taken with a Singh-Ray LB Color Combo Polarizer.

While on our annual vacation, I went down to the Avon Pier and got some shots of the waves coming in during the day. I used a Singh-Ray Mor-Slo 5 stop ND and a Vari-ND Duo Filter for the long exposure during the day.

While on vacation, there was one location that I really wanted to go for a sunset shoot. The weather didn’t cooperate most days and out of the week, we had one night that worked in our favor. The setting sun is almost perfectly aligned with the direction of this dock during the week I’m in the area. I was hoping for a clear horizon but it didn’t work out. For Cullen

Earlier in the month, I spent a day off with my son Cullen on his Birthday. We got up early and went to Great Falls so that I could take him out on the river where I go when I’m there. We got there about 30 before sunrise and I walked him through the steps of taking a picture like this. Cullen is very interested in photography and we both had a great time. He also got a chuckle out of watching his dad slip on one of the rocks and get a bit wet but that is another story. The image was taken with the following Singh-Ray filters: 3 stop Reverse ND, a 2 stop Soft ND and a LB Color Combo Polarizer.

Sunrise, Great Falls National Park, VA

Sunrise on the Potomac River, Great Falls National Park, VA. We could have done with a few more clouds in the sky to give the sun something to reflect off of. It was still a great place to spend the first hours of light. Photo was taken with my Singh-Ray LB Color Combo filter along with 3 stop ND and 2 stop ND Grad filters.

Experimenting

I have been experimenting with long exposures lately. I have a couple Singh-Ray Neutral Density filters that make my exposures minutes long. The moving water turns into glass due to the long exposure. I am looking forward to trying this out at the ocean this summer when we go on vacation. Need some stronger waves to really get some good images.

The sun was just coming up and the tide was high. It was a very quiet morning on the dock.

Foggy Maryland Morning

Another shot captured on my way into work a couple months ago. Found this tree trunk in an open field where the fog was trying to lift. The air was very still and you could almost hear a pin drop.
